Part. 1Chapter 8
The Queen's Birthday Celebration
Rin woke up to the first hint of day break. She opened her eyes and sat up. She saw that both her and Merida had a wool blanket over them. As she felt her stomach growl, it was time for breakfast. She got up clenching her hand to her stomach for a moment trying to calm it down. Rin walked over to see the view from the windows She was surprised to see a light layer of fog was over the land scape. Rin was not sure what time it was but Merida was right the nights had been getting colder around here. August had just ended summer was now leaving this land for sure. Fall was just around the corner. Rin looked passed the Castle grounds where there was some homes outside beyond the wall. Facing down hill Rin's eyes scanned the ground and for a moment or two she saw someone run. It looked as if the figure was tall and wide. It must have been one of the men from the kingdom the way they ran. Rin thought for a moment, she thought of nothing more for the time being. As she turned to see and hear Merida waking up.
"Good morning Merida, how did you sleep?" asked Rin
"Hmm, oh morning Rin. I slept like a baby. How about you?" Merida asked as she stretched her arms and back.
"I slept good." Replied Rin a thought then hit her, "Merida isn't today your mothers birthday? Everyone should be up for that soon right?"
"Oh...Ya everyone should be getting ready for mums birthday." she said as she stood up.
"What are you going to give to her for a gift?" Asked Rin as she was getting ready to put her shoes on.
"OH NO!" Cried Merida "I forgot to get her something....Oh what do I do what do I do?" said Merida as she began to pace back and forth looking a bit panic.
"Calm down Merida we will think of something? What does she like maybe you can make her something like a drawing? Or a poem she might like?" Suggested Rin.
Merida stopped dead in her tracks, "That's it I will right mum a poem. Great idea Rin." she gave Rin a reassuring smile. "Wait I have never maid a poem before is it hard to write one down? What if she does not like my poem? What if I am a really bad writer?" Merida began to pace back and forth once more with a panic.
Rin sighed and then grabbed Merida by the arm. "Well there is only one way to find all this out now isn't there. We sit down and give it a try." She pulled the Red headed Princess to her writing desk and placed her on the seat. Merida was surprised by all this. Rin then saw some paper and a feathered pen and ink to use on a shelf. She put the items in front of Merida and grabbed an extra stool to sit on. "Now lets give this a try shall we."
"A-are you sure It will be alright to write a poem?" Merida asked. Not looking to confident that she could make a good gift for her mother or not.
"It will be fine. Not all Poems rhyme or at least they don't have too. That's something I was told growing up. Some times I would like to write poems and I always loved to read them. All you have to do is write from your heart." Rin finally said.
"Write from my heart? I...I think I can do that. Alright ill give it a go." Said Merida as she took the feathered pen and dipped it in the ink and begin to write. The poem was going to be a wonderful gift for her mum Merida just new it.

After breakfast was given to them in Merida's bed room. She was finally done with the poem. Rin looked over it and agreed it was a nice poem her friend made. As a way of showing thanks Merida did some braiding part of Rin's hair and put a purple ribbon to tie it off.
"There we go now your already for today." Said Merida.
Rin looked in a hand held mirror, "Thank you its very pretty." Rin said. She gave Merida a hug.
"Well I thought the purple ribbon would be a nice touch since your eye color is almost the same as the ribbon. So now it makes them even prettier." said Merida as she gave her friend a hug back.
Bagpipes were soon heard across the whole castle grounds. It was time to celebrate the Queen's birthday. Merida had gone with her father and brothers to sit with Elinore. While Karin could go and see Norrick for a bit. Many heads turned as Rin walked by. Were they all looking because she was one of the guest. Well word sure traveled fast. She finally found Norrick not to far from her line of vision. He was sparing with another man. They both seemed about even as of right now fighting with the iron swords. Norrick looked like he was enjoying himself.
"I wonder if I can give that a try?" Rin said out loud. She felt a bit out of place to just go up and grab a sword like that. It felt more unnatural to not use her sword Ezka. But that was to be kept a secret and would only come out if Rin was in real danger to began with. She gave a soft sigh. And just stood there watching a some more. Once Norrick had won the sparing match with man. He was bumped up to the next slot to spar someone new.
Rin walked over to the both that had the sparing sign up. She looked to see what it was all about for the prize if winning? Low and behold it was a bag full of silver. And the winner would get 20 pieces of it. Now Rin normally did not like winning money but she was a bit on the short side and could use this for the next space port they might go to. She watched as Norrick and some of the other men laughed and were having a good time.
Well now or never she thought? She breathed in and turned around pointing at the others. "HEY! I want to sign up for this sparing match."
The men grew silent for a moment then began to laugh again all except Norrick. He looked amused that Rin wanted to join in now. "You think you can beat me Princess?" asked Norrick in a booming voice of his own.
"I sure can and I bet I can beat everyone of you men in a sparing match with a steal sword!" she was not backing down from the fun now.
"Oh the lass thinks she can beat all 5 of us one by one? Lets see you try it then Princess." said the man who had lost to Norrick not that long ago.
Rin was not going to let this chance go. "Sounds good to me. I will start with you then if you don't mind? And then the other 3 then Norrick ill beat last."

Karin was given a wooden sword to use while the other men all used the same. "Alright then here are the rules. First one to hit the other between the shoulder and the knee line once wins." said Norrick as he gave the command.
Rin and the other man began. The man did not know what he was getting into. He charged first. Rin came in running forward too. Her sparing partner swung the wooden sword down trying to his her shoulder. He missed as Rin spun around behind him. He turned too. The wooden swords clashed together. The men began to cheer and a crowd had started to form around the two fighters. After a good 2 minutest Rin finally saw an opening. She then was able to hit the man's side of the rips from under his arm.
"Winner of round 1 Lady Karin!" said Norrick.
The crowd of at least 20 cheered for Rin. She wiped some sweat from her brow then said, "Who's next of the 4 remaining?" She felt proud that she had won at least one and was having fun too. The other 3 guys leaned in together to talk to each other.
"We see you are quite good Lassie. How about going up against the 3 of us at once. Will tire you out real well then maybe let you spar with your friend after. How does that sound?" asked the one in the middle.
Norrick looked worried and was about to intervene but Karin cut him off. "You got a deal." said Rin a loud voice. The crowd cheered her on. It seemed like this was going to be a bit of a challenge indeed. But lucky for Rin she was able to take all of them out in with less then 2 minutest. "You're next Norrick." Rin said while huffing and puffing for air.
Norrick walked up to Rin looking a now very worried for her and how tired she looked. "Rin are you sure you want to go through with this? I mean you worn out and need to rest."
"Don't worry Norrick I got this. Ill be able to win. And the winner gets the 20 pieces of silver. How about you and I even make the loser kiss the winner?" She said with a determent look.
Norrick thought about this for a moment then said, "Fine but don't say I did not worn you."
The both got in their stands and then began. Norrick was faster then Rin thought he was. He really was not kidding around about this. But Rin was not going to lose that easily. The wooden swords kept meeting each other. neither one of them able to hit the other person. The crowd now seemed to cheer for both sides. Karin turned and blocked Norrick before he could get into an opening to win. She managed to push him back sending him back about 3 steps. Both panting harder as they kept sparing. They seemed pretty evenly matched at this point. As Rin blocked another strike in the moments that fallowed after. She thought she saw a wide and tall man who looked like the figure running in the fog at day break. She saw him standing there wearing a hooded cloak over his head. She saw his face. His face looked very sad for some reason. Then it happened Rin could feel deep sadness from this man. Why was he so sad had something happened in his life? But before Rin could think any further Norrick saw an opening for his wooden sword to strike. But before he even got a chance to hit. Karin fell over from fainting and over working herself.
The last thing Rin could remember was seeing the ground and hearing Norrick's voice calling her name.

A few hours went by Merida and her family were informed of what had happened to Karin at the sparing match. The party was still going on cake had already been eaten and birthday gifts were already given to the Queen. She was very happy to have such a wonderful birthday but once cake was eaten she rushed over to see to that her guest was alright.
"How's Lady Karin doing now?" asked Elinore as she came in the castle. Worried for the child. One of the maids told the Queen about Rin and how she was now awake but resting alone in a guest room. Elinore thanked her maid and rushed up to the upper levels of the castle. She opened the door which was left a jar. Rin was indeed alone. She had a cool damp rag across her face. She looked to be in some sort of pain but it was hard to tell.
Elinore saw there was a bucket of cooled water and fresh rag hanging over the side of it. She put the rag in the water and then ringed it out. Once the new one was placed on Karin's forehead her face softened a bit. She began to steer in her sleep. Elinore thought now would be a good time to call to her. "Karin dear. Are you alright now?"
Rin opened her eyes and turned to see Elinore but for a moment she thought she was seeing her mother in front of her. "M-mama?" she asked.
"Oh um sorry dear. No it's me Queen Elinore remember?" explained Elinore.
"Ugh...what happened? Why am I in bed?" asked Rin as she tried to sit up.
"Careful dear. You don't want to get up to fast. Its best you rest." said Elinore in a calm soothing voice.
"Sounds good to me." said Rin with a little smile.
Elinore smiled too, "Well I am glad to see you are awake again. But next time you should not fight so many men at once with out taking a brake or drinking some water."
"Sorry I just felt like I really had to win. I really wanted that bag of silver. Oh well Norrick can use it as he pleases." said Rin. But now that she thought of it where was he? "Um is Norrick around?" she asked Elinore.
"I could go get him for you hes in the room next door looking very worried. Pacing back and forth." Said Elinore.
"Haha just like Merida dose when she seems to be worried." said Rin in a light sounding voice.
"Ah, your right about that. It seems the both have the same habit then." said Elinore. She stood up and replied with, "Ill go and get him. Just stay put and no getting out of that bed. That's an order from a Queen."
The door shut Rin closed her eyes for a moment and thought back as to why she fainted. Normally she would not have. But she really must have done a number on herself. But why was that tall and wide man so sad. And the sadness coming from him too? Perhaps it had been a while since she had felt the sadness like that form someone and pushing herself to hard did not help either. A knock came at the door. "Come in." called out Rin. She felt like she was going to get a lecture from Norrick once he would come in.
The door opened and Norrick came in he shut the door behind him with a light thump and walked over. He did look worried but also had a bit of anger in his eyes. "Are you feeling alright." he said. His voice sounded a bit gruff and a hint of anger was in it too.
Rin then forced herself to sit up all the way. She had an expression on her face that looked as if though she was going to cry if Norrick was to yell at her. "I-I am so sorry. Please don't be mad...I mean...You have a right to be angry with me. A-and It was really dumb of me to push myself like that. I am sorry. So please don't yell at me. I really am okay now."
Norrick took the last step to the bed and leaned over pulling Rin close to him. His forehead against her own. He sighed and then opened his eyes looking right into hers. Karin began to blush. Norrick could not take it anymore. He leaned in and gave her a light kiss on the lips. She was surprised by this and pulled back. "Come here." said Norrick as he half pulled her head back and she half moved in closer to him. His lips cress over hers once again. This time Rin responded back. Norrick pulled away first then said, "Thank goodness your alright now. Don't worry I was more worried then angry with you." He smiled as he saw how cute and red Karin looked.
She darted her eyes away from him feeling really hot in the face from the kisses just now and looking at him too. "I need to cool my head and i am going to rest some more." she said as she pulled the blanket over her and lied back down.
"heh alright then. Get some rest." Replied Norrick. He placed the damp cloth over her forehead again. He kissed her hand before letting go. "Oh one last thing." said Norrick.
"Yes?" asked Rin.
"I love you Rin." he said as he looked right at her with a kind and warm gaze.
"I love you too." she replied back. With a loving look in her sleepy eyes.
